Understanding the Definition of Health Related Fitness

Definition of Health Related Fitness

Being a Health and Wellness Professional, it is my job to understand common terms and definitions in the industry, as well as keep up with the evolving trends. Through my experience I have found that some terms deserve less clarification than they are given.

In addition to explaining the definition of Health Related Fitness, this article intends to explain some of the related terms, and to point out the differences between them.

Is it all in one name?

The fitness world seems to use the Health Related Fitness concept like general fitness principles – interchangeable with others like “Physical Fitness”, “Health and Fitness” or simply “Fitness”.

While all of these terms can be included in the broad term Health and Physical Fitness, they individually refer to different aspects – both generic and specific. Unfortunately, references to these and other fitness-related terms are often unclear, while there is little consistency in their intended usage; there is a kind of “generally accepted” usage for them, but individuals often rely on their own interpretations, and this can lead to confusion.

So, does Health-Related Health simply infer well-being through good health? Not really. That’s why we need to understand a little deeper behind these words before digesting their definitions.

How did the term Health-Related Physical Fitness come about?

That’s a good question. One might ask what this concept is all about – can’t we just use the terms “Fitness” or “Physical Fitness”?” Why is Health “Related”?

The main reason stems from the fact that most of the terms health and wellness are used inconsistently and often refer to different concepts or meanings. Following the 1996 report from the US Surgeon General (Physical Activity and Health; report from the Surgeon General), there are steps to try and address the alarming increase in obesity rates among the general American population.

Studies and initiatives require standardization among physicians, health practitioners, and fitness trainers to address the task at hand. Enter “Physical Fitness Related to Health”, a working term to address common health conditions in the community.

Definition of Health-Related Fitness

According to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the leading authority in this field, ineffective, vaguely worded and subjective definitions, as well as definitions containing terms that require self-definition, have contributed to confusing the term “Physical Fitness”. .”

There is no reliable guide for Health and Wellness Professionals to measure “Physical Fitness”, as the term has been defined loosely and inconsistently. Therefore, one should consider the concept of Health-Related Fitness. Therefore, the definition centers on the 5 Components of Physical Fitness that relate to “good health”. These components are:

Cardiorespiratory Fitness
Body composition
Flexibility
muscle strength
Muscle Endurance

On the other hand, Skill-Related Fitness Components are:

Balance
Reaction Time
Coordination
Agility
Speed
Power

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the definition of Physical Fitness emphasizes the difference between Health-Related Physical Fitness and Athletic Ability Physical Fitness. The point of departure is the “health” of the US nation, often referred to as the “public health perspective.” In this regard, the 5 Health-Related Fitness Components are more important than those related to Athletic Ability (or Skills-Related Components).

Although the concept of Health-Related Wellness has an integral relationship with “good health”, the 5 Components are handled individually by healthcare professionals to enable their measurement.

Now that we have a deeper understanding of the term, what is its purpose?

Continuing from the definition left out, the purpose of the 5 Component measurement is to advise clients on their own Health-Related Wellness, and to use the data obtained from the test to design an appropriate exercise program that can then be evaluated.

The five components contribute equally to form a holistic Health Related Fitness, which is directly related to the health of ordinary people, in a normative concept. In other words, it is a standard that allows consistent application.

It is therefore important for those working in the health and wellness industry not to confuse “overall physical fitness” with “Health-Related Physical Fitness.”

To conclude, let us consider the difference between Physical Fitness and Health Related Fitness

Keep in mind that regular physical exercise can improve overall Physical Fitness, as well as Health-Related Fitness. However, overall fitness is a general term and is subject to subjective interpretation, while Health-Related Fitness can be assessed.

Therefore, the difference between these two terms exists because Health-Related Physical Fitness can be measured according to a set of established comparative norms.

This is where the “rubber hit the road”. The guidelines established by ACSM allow healthcare professionals to work with clients to assess and measure their response to exercise and prescribe an appropriate exercise program. The client’s progress can then be monitored and adjusted if necessary to achieve the desired fitness goals.
